Who should attend:
Local and regional – administration and physicians.
Local – ER, BHS, women services physicians and nurses

Objectives: 

  1.  Consider common challenges and related practice and documentation pointers with regard to identified patient groups (obstetrical patients, chronic pain patients, mental health patients, intoxicated patients, transferees for radiology, etc.)
  2.  Learn practical tips for proactive medical record documentation in the ED and OB department to avoid citation for EMTALA violations (e.g., finding of no emergency medical condition and stability and supporting objective observations).
  3.  Learn about the geographic application of EMTALA, with a special scrutiny on the traditional ED and OB Department; hospital locations where patients present on an unscheduled basis.
  4.  Review the obligations of on-call physicians called to attend emergency patients and provide stabilizing treatment.
  5.  Review the obligation of receiving facilities to accept transfers from other facilities where necessary services are not available.
  6. Review the requirements for use of ambulance versus private vehicle transfer for patients protected by EMTALA.
  7. Review the scope of the medical screening examination (to include diagnostics necessary to rule out an emergency medical condition and specialty services available on-call). These must generally
    be performed prior to transfer to another hospital, or discharge to a private clinic.
